The Storyteller’s Daughter by Cameron Dokey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Wonderful Retelling
This is a wonderful retelling of a centuries-old story. The characters are rich, the setting is full of texture, the prose is engaging. And the lessons learned are solid and important. I appreciate the weight given to the wisdom of women which may not have been present in the original versions. I highly recommend this story as an individual read for older Elementary, or middle-grade students. I am considering this to read aloud to my rising first grader, however there are some scenes with death and blood and I’m not sure if he is quite ready for that, especially because the characters are painted so well they feel real.
I have given 4 stars because the style of writing does not flow as well as I am would prefer, though I suspect mimics the style of oral storytelling from which it originated.
Overall great read!
